Things to Do & Explore

Step outside. Breathe in. You’re in the good bit now.

Gowbarrow Old Hall sits in the heart of the northern Lake District, just above the shores of Ullswater – one of the quieter, deeper lakes, where the rhythm slows and the views open wide. From the garden gate, you’ve got instant access to walks with proper soul: Gowbarrow Fell is right behind the house, with routes winding through ancient woodland, bracken-covered hillsides, and views that stop you in your tracks.

A short walk from the house brings you to Aira Force, a tumbling waterfall wrapped in myth and moss, and a favourite for kids, dogs, and Wordsworth fans alike. Venture a little further and you’ll find the shores of Ullswater itself – perfect for a paddle, a picnic, or a ride on one of the heritage steamers that glide between Glenridding and Pooley Bridge.

Nearby you’ll find proper pubs, excellent coffee stops, and village shops that still sell everything from Kendal Mint Cake to cast iron pans. The market town of Penrith is just 20 minutes by car, and Keswick – with its theatres, bookshops and galleries – makes a rewarding day out.

If you’re feeling active, there’s wild swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking on the lake, along with cycling routes that range from gentle lanes to serious climbs. Or you could just walk, read, nap, repeat.

This part of Cumbria is quieter than the honeypot spots further south, which is exactly why we love it. It’s a place to rediscover nature, roam without schedule, and end the day with tired legs and full bellies.

Whether you’re in hiking boots or slippers, there’s plenty to explore – at your own pace, and in your own way.
