Welcome to Gowbarrow Old Hall

Above Ullswater. Beneath the fells. Held by history.

Gowbarrow Old Hall isn’t just a place to stay – it’s somewhere to slow down, spread out and properly switch off. Tucked into the quiet folds above Ullswater, this 18th-century farmhouse has been gently restored as a Lakeland hideaway for families, friends and well-behaved dogs.

The house sleeps nine across four carefully considered bedrooms – from spacious king-size rooms to bunk beds and a triple that adapts to suit how you travel.

Whether you’re here with three generations, a few close friends or a full family cast, there’s space to be together and space to be still.

You’ll find a country kitchen with French windows opening out to the garden, a breakfast bar for slow mornings, and everything you need to cook properly (or not cook at all). Gather round the dining room’s wood-burning stove for long meals and local wine, or curl up in the sitting room with a book, a blanket, and views across the fells.

There’s a boot room with a sink for muddy boots (and muddy dogs), a pantry with a beautiful old porcelain sink, and a garden made for bare feet, morning coffee, and smoky summer barbecues.

When it comes to comfort, we don’t do compromise. Three bathrooms, fibre WiFi, and parking for up to three cars mean everything works just as it should – including the EV charger in the farmyard next door. And if you’re after something properly special, we sell 100% grass-fed beef from our regenerative farm. Just ask.

This is a house that holds stories – of the land, the people, and the rhythm of life here in the Lake District. We hope it becomes part of yours, too.
